A lot actually.

If you or a loved one has suffered from cancer. Exposure to radiation may be the cause.

Many famous Hollywood actors that starred in those western movies shot in the 50′s died from cancer. Could exposure to radiation in the Nevada dessert be the cause? The Nevada dessert is loaded with radiation as a direct result of all the nuclear testing in Nevada.

Don’t think the situation has gotten any better either. Now we have China in on the act too. Don’t forget Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. Now we have a double whammy going on. For instance, take Hershey’s chocolate. Its bad enough that they may or may not use milk from the local area in Pennsylvania (that’s near by Harrisburg, the state capital, right on the doorstep of Three Mile Island) but now they are using genetically modified ingredients in their products. What’s next? Oh yea, now we have to worry about our food being irradiated with out being labeled. When will it stop?

Being forewarned is forearmed.

Why is acupuncture so successful in treating low back pain?

It’s like this, you see, by inserting needles in special acupuncture

points in the low back any acupuncturist worth their salt

can improve the circulation in the lumbar area thereby, reducing

pain and removing any stagnant metabolic wastes

that may be hanging around as a painful reminder of

the “grid lock” that may have taken place in low back.

Which, as a result, has pretty much halted most of the circulation in

the lumbar area, that is until the acupuncture treatment

was implemented, removing the stagnation, improving circulation

and helping reduce the pain. Now that makes sense, right?

Here’s the deal with acupuncture – by the time you are ready for acupuncture you may have exahausted all your options and you are desperate (or maybe not). The thing is, as far as I can tell, is that patients come to me beacuse they are in pain. Now the real question you have to ask yourself is – Is the pain I’m feeling going to over ride any real or imagined objections to getting a needle stuck in me by a stranger?

Maybe you are one of these people who hate to take medication or you tried the medication and you don’t like the side effects. Then acupuncture is for you.

Maybe the thought of needles gives you the willies. Rest assured the needles are about the diameter of 2 of your hairs. Very thin and virtually painless on insertion.

I’ll be honest with you – I tried acupuncture well before I was a student. In Florida, if you have been in a car accident your PIP insurance will cover it. since I had nothing to loose and one of my friends worked for a local acupuncturist I decided to try it and guess what! It wasn’t so bad. Eventually I wound up in acupuncture school and to my amazement did quite well.

Chinese medical diagnosis…hmmm…conjures up all kinds of mysterious images and exotic aromas. Chinese Medicine can be divided into two distinct branches.Traditional Chinese Medicine – which is what is practiced in mainland China today. It is based on the 8 principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 5 Elements – Earth, wood, metal, water and fire. While I was in school the Doctors always told us that the 5 Elements were a primitive type of acupuncture theory and that the 8 Principles were more advanced. The 5 elements are a very ancient form of Chinese medicine. I suspect its roots may be related to Ayurvedic Medicine as that is a very, very ancient medical art from India and it even predates the 5 Elements. The 8 Principles are a relatively modern approach and really became popular during the Chinese revolution. The Communists figured out it was an inexpensive way to keep the masses healthy. Now in China you have the best of both. I think it is the perfect marriage of East meets West.

When someone suffers from a chronic skin condition that causes a severe itch, acupuncture can help. During an initial consultation, it is imperative to determine the root cause of the skin malady. Once the skin malady has been diagnosed according to the 8 Principals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, then the stop itch treatment can be administered along with the special points that will address the root cause of the chronic skin condition. Please keep in mind that when dealing these type of diseases it will require expert acupuncture treatment, dietary adjustments and nutritional supplementation and of course – time.

OK. I’m back. I bought the www.hainpurefoods.com brand cold pressed sunflower oil instead. I’ve already tried it a few times. It’s too early to see results and quite honestly I’m not consistent enough either.

But I can tell you that afterward my teeth feel happy. It’s hard to explain – they feel smooth, like they are free from microscopic debris. Give it a try. You’ll know what I mean.

hmmm…let’s see what’s hot.

I’m not qualified to answer that unless we are discussing differentiation of syndrome according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), then we would probably be discussing heat – a slightly cooler condition as comparet to “hot.” Hot if used as a Chinese medical term and is rarely seen in one’s clinical practice. In these type of extreme cases Western medicine intervention is necessary.

Heat syndromes typically combine with other elements such as damp to create a damp-heat condition. Ever heard of night sweats? Night sweats could be a female hormonal thing (according to Western medicine or a yin deficiency in Chinese medicine) or if it is specifically localized to the back of the neck at night it could be a damp-heat condition. Over consumption of alcohol and eating excessive amounts of sweets creates a damp-heat condition in the body. But then again is it really a damp heat syndrome or is the under lying root cause a yin deficiency?

and what’s not…

Since we are already discussing Chinese medical terminology lets talk about “cold” conditions. These type of conditions are very common.

In previous entries, I mentioned osteoarthritis – this is considered a “syndrome” with cold characteristics. What about poor circulation (blood stasis)? Typically it’s the same thing…ah, but what is the root cause? Is blood stasis the root cause or just the symptom? There may be a constitutional predisposition to cold (yang deficiency) that may be the underlying cause of poor circulation, as well as, many other symptoms that one has probably just lived with for a good number of years.

If you are suffering from chronic conditions that Western medicine just isn’t really addressing, why not call for an appointment today?

Here is a snapshot of group of points typically used to treat arthritis pain in the feet.

So you may be wondering – what is the difference between rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis?

According to the principles of traditional Chinese Medicine – rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by a burning or heat like sensation. It is localized (stays in the same place) and you can see that it can become red – indicating the presence of heat and inflammation. And, it can be aggravated with movement.

Osteoarthritis is different. It is typically characterized by pain, which is typically dull not sharp) and usually gets better upon movement. There is inflammation, but it is a puffy type of inflammation, like there is a bit of edema in the immediate area. Cold weather or rainy days can make it worse.

What do these two types have in common?

Acupuncture can help relive the pain in both situations. I know because I have treated many, many cases of arthritis. If it can work for them it can work for you too!

So what are you waiting for? Give us a call today!

Who has tension in their shoulders? Raise your hand! Nope, can’t do that? No worries. Acupuncture to the rescue once again.

There are a few special points on top of your shoulders, they are easy to locate because golf ball sized knots seem to magically appear on the acupuncture point GB 21. This would seem to indicate that acupuncture would be a great option for melting them right into oblivion.
